MILTON LEAD SERVICE LINE INVENTORY

In compliance  with the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) the material of water services in the Town can be found and searched for in the link below.

The Town submitted its service line replacement plan to MassDEP in October 2024 and it is available at this link (PDF).

Background and Regulations

On December 16, 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced final revisions to the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for lead and copper under authority of the Safe Drinking Water Act - called the Lead and Cooper Rule Revisions (LCRR).  The LCRR will identify the most at-risk communities and ensure systems have plans in place to rapidly respond by taking actions to reduce elevated levels of lead in drinking water.  Some of the major changes include requiring systems to inventory (identify) and make public the locations of lead service lines (LSLs) and to develop a LSL replacement plan by October 16, 2024. 

In December 2022, the Town of Milton applied for and successfully received financial assistance related to completing the LSLs inventory, through MassDEP DWSRF Lead Service Line Grant. 

Here in Milton, we are working to identify all lead service lines. This inventory will find out if your service line is made of lead. A service line is a pipe that connects the water main in the street to building plumbing. We have gone through our in-house inventory and are now asking for your help to identify what materials make up your water service line.

Does your water service line have lead? 

The drinking water from the treatment plant that travels through the street water mains to your house is virtually lead free. Lead service lines, lead solder in indoor plumbing, and lead in older plumbing fixtures can cause lead to enter your drinking water. 

Lead in drinking water can harm human health. It can damage the brain, red blood cells, and kidneys. The greatest risk is to young children, pregnant women, and unborn babies. 

Who is responsible for the service line?

In Milton, the water utility is responsible for the service line from the water main in the street to the curb stop valve. The property owner is responsible for the service line from the curb stop valve to the plumbing inside your home.

House-to-House Inspection Program

The Town of Milton DPW/Engineering Department have been conducting house-to-house inspections to confirm the material of water service pipes. The inspection team consists of two staff from DPW/Engineering Departments in a Town Vehicle with Town Logo Vests. They also carry Town issued ID's that can be confirmed with the Milton Police Department. When in doubt, always call the DPW general line: 617-898-4900 or Milton Police Non-Emergency Line. We rely in the public's assistance for the success of this program, however, when in doubt you can opt to not answer the door and they will leave a notice explaining the program so you can reschedule at a time and date you are more comfortable with.
