The Town of Milton is excited to announce its Adopt a Traffic Island program!

Civic groups, companies, and individuals now have the opportunity to install and maintain the landscape of several traffic islands across town.

Program Requirements:

Sponsors are responsible for installing/maintaining landscaping for traffic island.

Sponsor is required to provide a landscaping plan to the DPW before work can begin. Plans should include all types of plants to be approved by DPW/Tree Warden. No unnatural items allowed, only natural plant material (trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, compost, mulch, etc). DPW Director is allowed to make exceptions on a case by case basis.

Conversely, invasive plants shall never be used. A list of invasive species can be found at: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/massachusetts-prohibited-plant-list. The Adopt-an-Island program promotes the use of native plants.

Sponsor is responsible for purchasing plant/natural materials.

Sponsor is responsible for watering, litter removal, mowing, mulching, weed removal and plant replacement as needed.

Sponsor is responsible for Police details, if needed.

Locations where visibility is not a concern are encouraged to plant a variety of perennials, annuals, shrubs and trees for greater interest. Where visibility may be hindered by taller plantings, the height of plants shall not exceed 30 inches to avoid impeding visibility for vehicles.

Sponsor shall provide draft sign including dimensions for approval by DPW.

No pesticides will be allowed, and no fertilizers shall be used without the approval of the Director of Public Works.

Participants who fail to comply with the program requirements and directions of the Department may be subject to termination of their participation.

First-come, first-served application approval.

Renewal requires a re-approved landscape design due 30 days after expiration date.

No monetary compensation in lieu of work will be accepted

*Please note all applications are subject to approval by Town personnel and require a signature agreeing to the terms outlined above.  Please be sure to review all requirements of the agreement to ensure eligibility.

Any questions please reach out to the Environmental Coordinator.
